Customer Problem:
A lost key was generated for a 2018 Range Rover Evoque using Xhorse XM38 JLR-style smart key and programmed via VVDI Key Tool Plus Pad two weeks ago. However, the key is now behaving inconsistently:
- Sometimes the smart functions work normally.
- Other times, the vehicle does not detect the key unless placed in the emergency start/inductive area.
- The buttons occasionally respond, but often do not.
- The issue is more noticeable when the key is inside its housing.
- The original key continues to function without any problems.
Does anyone have suggestions regarding the possible cause?
Suggested Solutions:
- Check the Key Fob Battery
Even if the battery is new, test it or replace it with another known-good battery to ensure sufficient power.
- Adjust Power Output Settings
Open the key generation menu in the tool.
Select “Modify” and increase the power output level.
The system will read the key’s current configuration and display details including frequency and power level.
Try raising the value in small steps—for example, if the current setting is 5, increase it to 10.
- Try a Different Key
Some users have reported similar issues with XM38 smart key.
Two alternative approaches are:
Use a different compatible key, such as an Autel iKey smart key.
Clone the key using BCM’s stored key ID, or purchase an original key and program it via OBD.
If problems continue, consider verifying key initialization steps or consulting technical support.
